Sharepoint 2003 Change machine name does not change server name in Sharepoint

Sometimes we have some weird problems to solve, this morning one of my colleagues asked me to help him with a Sharepoint Server.

He had changed the Sharepoint server machine name and the Sharepoint still had the reference to the old one with all the jobs assigned. Well, first of all is never good idea to use this approach, but sometimes we just have to solve problems . . .

Ok, what to do, he tried to remove the old server without disconnecting the Sharepoint jobs from it the result was that the server keeped showing up . . . so the thing to do was to disconnect the jobs from the server and remove it from the Sharepoint !!!

After this only one Sharepoint server appeared and we could assign the jobs to the correct server name.

Any one had any luck with this? I too have cloned a server with sharepoint 2003 installed, changed the machine name but am having a hell of a time trying to point everything to the new server name. Is there a config file for sharepoint server?

    Many thanks in advance
